We are living in a material world and I am a material girl

Just wanted to share a dumb little story that I found amusing. This morning I went in to sub for 1st grade at about 745, and the secretary informs me that she has me down for all day tomorrow and friday but only a half day today. This is not what she told me on the phone, but whatever. So I'm going back at 11. Since I was already up and moving, I decide to wash Samantha (my car) and pick up a few things at Albertsons. As I'm paying for my items (mom, this was right after I hung up with you) the 50-ish year old looking woman that's bagging my grocerys says "You know, when you first walked in here I had to do a double take, because you look just like Madonna". Um... really? So I say, "Hmm, never heard that one before" and she laughs and says, "Yeah, same blonde hair, same figure, same face shape, everything!"
I'm officially annoyed and offended. Madonna is a nice looking woman and all, but she's like 50! And has crazy yoga arms! And same face shape?? Are you kidding me? So I am just ignoring this woman as I am putting my change away, thinking people from New Mexico are nutty. Then she says, "And I bet you're about the same age"
Now there is a part of me that immediately realizes there must be some kind of mistake. But the other part of me is thinking "what if she is a weird New Mexican who thinks Madonna is only like 40 and assumes that I am also 35-40? Do I really look 15 years or more older than I really am?" I am just looking at this lady like she has grown another head. As I'm reaching for my cart I kind of smile and say "I think I'm just a bit younger than her". Now it is the ladys turn to look at me like I've grown another head. She says "Well she's 21, am I way off?" Now I know she's a crazy New Mexican who's probably on drugs. I just kinda smile and say "ok well thanks so much, have a nice day" and leave. It wasn't until I was already on the way home that I realized what happened... I'm pretty sure she meant, "my daugher", but with her hick accent she said it more like "ma dotta" and I heard "Madonna". Now I feel bad for acting like she was crazy and on drugs. Ha.

Red Carpet Rundown

Ahh the Oscars. Love them. Of course I get bored and turn the channel during the more boring awards and the montage of people that have died, but I usually tune in for the big awards, and I always watch the best part, the red carpet! I LOVE seeing what everyone chose to wear, and have a full critique going. This year was no different. This blog might be more interesting for the girls in the fam.
I'll start with my personal fave of the night. Kate Winslet. I LOVE HER! Sort of a two tone dress, assymetrical which is a great look for her, simple but chic jewelry, perfect-for-the-occasion hair. I thought she looked amazing!! She has a fantastic body but looks like she might actually eat a full meal now and then. I love everything she says. Did I mention I love her?? I didn't even see her movie she won for, but I am reading the book. I'll rent it when it comes out.
Next, Natalie Portman. GORGEOUS! She stood out. She was wearing the very bright colored (pink? Purple? bubblegum? you be the judge) strapless dress which I loved the top of. Her hair swept back, perfect. Mainly her face is what took the cake. She has such a gorgeous face. It's sickening, really. No necklace, which was a good choice in my opinion. It let her dress take center stage.
Now on to Sarah Jessica Parker. Wow. "That's a lot of dress" as one commenter said. In case you forgot, she was wearing the strapless dress with a super huge, ballerina style skirt. (I really wish I knew how to add pics to this thing, it would really make my blog more complete) I predict she'll take a lot of crap for this dess, huge risk. Let me just say, I loved it. Very unique, she looked like a princess. Where can you where a dress like this to, if not the Oscars? It was fun and glamorous, an odd mix. She described it as a "barely mint" color. Her hubby Mathew Broderick then said his suit was "barely black". SJP came back with, "No, yours is midnight blue". Only SJP.
Amy Adams. She looked good, but I wasn't a big fan of the dress or the GIGANTIC collar necklace. I thought the necklace took away from her pretty hair & face. Wasn't that into it.
Anne Hathaway. She was wearing the sort of cream colored strapless fishtail dress. So pretty. Very "Oscars". Definitely something I would have worn. Nice updo as well. Classy, elegant, youthful.
Lets talk about Heidi Klum for a minute and her red dress. She is the most ridiculously gorgeous person in the world. She looked so amazing I literally felt ill for a moment. Loved the red, loved the style, the hair, the makeup...but way too much jewelry. A LOT of bangles.
Miley Cyrus. EH. She looked very.... Disney. Sort of this ruffled, giant mermaidish skirt. Lots and lots of beading, probably weighed 100 pounds. That said, she's what, 16? A good choice for a 16 year old. Very youthful. Wouldn't have been my choice, but I like her and I can't WAIT for the Hannah Montana movie, APRIL 10!
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. Both looked good I thought, but her dress was weird. It's black and tight which looks good on her, but its sort of feathery or tulle-ish, I can't tell but I don't really like it. She says she wanted to look like Audrey Hepburn. Kind of missed that one, Vanessa. Zac always looks pretty, but easy on that slicked seal head.
Beyonce, in her super super super ridiculously tight black and gold strapless number was totally predictable. If I would have had to guess what she would wear, I would have drawn you that exact dress (If I had any artistic ability, which I don't). Wasn't into it.
Diane Lane looked pretty boring. Boring black dress, boring hair, boring makeup. Yawn. Next.
Brangelina. Jeez I'm sick of them. Angie looks fabulous of course. But a little predictable as well. She's pretty, but I'm sick of her and her black dresses. I did like her emerald colored earrings. Brad on the other hand, I am never sick of. He looks amazing as always.
Meryl Streep looked very ladylike and glamorous. Good choice, maybe I would have picked a different color for her.
Jessica Beil. Um, no. Stringy, messy hair. Not cute. Weird dress. No, no, no.
Penelope Cruz. Loved it. The dress was white with a lot of of detail on the skirt. It was vintage, she said it was like 60 or 80 years old or something? I liked that. Tight bodice which looked good on her tiny body. I can never decide if I think she's pretty or not... kind of a small face. Loved her dress though.
Annnddd that's all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure I forgot someone. As for the actual awards... I like Heath and I thought he did great in the movie. Kate is fantastic, can't wait to see hers. Slumdog Millionaire dominated, haven't even seen it. I guess I will. And that's about all the awards I care about.

A General Update

I've never actually written a blog before, but always secretly wanted to so I guess this gives me the perfect excuse. So I guess this one is going to be a general update of my life for those of you who haven't really heard.. married life is fabulous and even though I've been married less than a year, I feel like my old life was a very, very long time ago. Everything has changed yet it seems surprisingly reg. By the way, won't it be nice to use words like "reg" "berini" "stun" "horrid" "tippish" etc. without people thinking you're crazy or asking you what they mean??? It's funny, I thought Mike knew all our family words, but on on super bowl I said "doggies" when something happened and he looked at me like I had ten heads. Anyway, I've been subbing pre k-12th grade and it's been very interesting. My favorite by far is the little ones. Especially the pre k kids, most of whom are special needs kids. I never thought I'd enjoy special needs kids, but some of them are just so cute and they try so hard... They mentioned giving me a full time job within the next couple months there, which I would love to do but I almost feel like it would be a big step down. I could have taught pre k years ago... what exactly was the point of graduating college then? My most hated grade is high school. I like the kids (most of them anyway) but it's such a boring day, I literally read almost an entire book in one busy "work day". I had to force myself not to read during my lunch break so that I wouldn't finish before 7th period and be left to stare at 30 kids doing a boring worksheet for 58 minutes. Also, Lea County (where I live) is the number ONE county in the NATION for teen pregnancy. They have a day care for the students babies on campus. They are building one at the Jr High as well. That's right, Jr High. A few weeks ago I had pregnant girls or girls with babies in every single one of my classes. Its insane and needless to say, our kids will not be attending Lovington High school. On a side note, I am always amused at how much Hollister these kids seem to wear with stuff like "del mar" or "la jolla" or my personal fave, "huntington beach" written on it. I told the girl in the huntington beach shirt that was where I'm from (close enough) and she gave me a rude look and said she'd never even heard of it and that it was "just a shirt". Okkk. I had a very strong urge to come back with an equally rude remark and spent the next 30 minutes coming up with various scathing comebacks in my head. None of which I can remember now. Most of the kids are actually cool though, but I still prefer 4 or 5 year olds. Anyway I guess that's enough rambling for today......
